Nicolas Cage and his 27-year-old wife are expecting their first child
Nicolas Cage, 58, and his wife Riko Shibata, 27, are expecting their first child together as husband and wife. In fact, the couple revealed earlier this week that they had already decided on a name for their first child.
In a recent interview with GQ, Cage discussed his sentiments about his growing family and his love for his wife. The pair married in March 2021, and they announced their pregnancy in the month of their one-year anniversary.
The couple first met in Japan in the year 2020. The pair, however, found it difficult to fly to each other anytime they wanted due to COVID social distancing and quarantine protocols. The couple had a long-distance engagement during the first year of their relationship.
On Q104.3 radio show, which his brother Marc Coppola hosts, Cage discussed his issues:
“She left New York and went back to Kyoto, Japan, and I went back to Nevada and I haven’t seen her for six months.”
Despite the problems posed by the pandemic, the couple’s connection blossomed, and Cage developed feelings for Shibata. Cage didn’t waste any time in proposing to Shibata and asking for her hand in marriage.
It should come as no surprise that Nicolas Cage’s engagement was anything but ordinary. Cage stated that he proposed to Shibata over FaceTime and had the engagement ring shipped to her via FedEx. It’s not the most traditional proposal narrative, but it’s in keeping with Cage’s unique personality.
On his brother’s radio show, Cage narrated:
“I got her a black diamond engagement ring. Her favorite color is black, so she wanted the black gold and the black diamond. I customized and personalized it, and I actually sent it to her FedEx”
Following their engagement, the pair married at the Wynn Las Vegas in a “very small and personal” ceremony.
Growing family
The couple has announced that they are expecting their first child together just over a year later. Shibata will have her first kid, whereas Cage already has two children from a previous relationship. Cage will be married for the fifth time in his life.
The couple has been unusually forthcoming about their pregnancy, including revealing prospective baby names. So far, Cage has stated that Akira Francesco and Lennon Augie are the main candidates for their baby’s name.
“Augie was my father’s nickname. And my uncle [Francis Ford Coppola] has decided to change his name to Francesco,”
Despite the fact that this is his fifth marriage, the veteran actor is optimistic that it will be his last. Cage stated:
“I am a romantic, and when I’m in love, I want to give that person everything I can.”
