A brave man drowns while attempting to save a friend
This heartbreaking story starts in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, where a brave guy named Alex Gibson drowned in the Irish Sea while attempting to save his friend.
Alex Gibson, a 22-year-old chip shop employee, was spending a night out in Blackpool with a buddy. During the night, the two were separated and went to different areas. That’s when his pal from the North Pier called him and said she didn’t want to live any longer.
Alex dashed towards her place after hearing the shocking confession. Despite the fact that Alex could not swim, he went to save his friend without hesitation. He dove in, caught up with his friend, and the two attempted to swim back to shore. But the tides were too strong, and Alex drowned because he didn’t know how to swim.
Alex’s friend described the situation that night at an inquest that took place in Blackpool on January 24. She stated:
“We were both in the water together. I was trying to help Alex because he couldn’t swim. We were hanging on to each other trying to keep each other afloat.
“I realised that the only way we were both getting out was if someone got help so I told him that I was going to get out and get help. It took me a while to swim back because the current was really strong.”
“I remember seeing him get further out. He was shouting for help.”
Sean Wright, a lifeboat helmsman, took part in the search for Alex. They discovered Alex face-down 200 meters from the coast at 5:06 a.m. He was transported to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, where doctors tried everything they could to save his life, but it was too late.
Alex’s friend Dillon Dixon spoke about him and the kind of upbeat and helpful person he was.
“He was a proud vegan and had a heart of gold,”
“He enjoyed going to Stanley Park to feed the birds. Alex has in the past had many dark thoughts and said he was tired of everything. He was always sad inside but had the biggest smile on his face.”
Alex Gibson was a hero, and he will be remembered as such for the rest of his life. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
