Elon Musk has officially purchased Twitter. After carefully building up equity in the social media behemoth since early 2022, the internet entrepreneur agreed to buy Twitter for $44 billion (£34.5 billion). Musk revealed his vision for how he wants the platform to change in a statement released after the deal. Musk said he wants to “make Twitter better than ever” in a variety of ways, including new features, open source algorithms, combating spam bots, and “authenticating all humans,” referring to Twitter as “the digital town square where things crucial to the survival of humanity are argued.”

Despite Musk’s high ambitions for the network, many users are skeptical of his vision of a Twitter free of censorship. “The last thing we need is a Twitter that willfully ignores violent and abusive comments directed at its users,” Amnesty International said in a statement, “especially those who are disproportionately impacted, such as women, non-binary people, and others.”

Many Twitter users have taken to the social media site to share memes and emotions as they come to terms with Musk’s arrangement with the company. Following Musk’s takeover, Good Place actor and TV host Jameela Jamil has left the platform.

She informed her one million followers: “I fear this free speech bid is going to help this hell platform reach its final form of totally lawless hate, bigotry, and misogyny. Best of luck.”

Meanwhile, Insider’s Dave Smith is concerned that he may be held responsible for a lot of things. The journalist is currently reminiscing on his 2017 Twitter conversation with Musk, which may have unwittingly ignited something in Musk’s thinking. Other humorous reactions can be seen farther down.

Users are already predicting the modifications that will be implemented, but are reverting to old communication methods such as PictoChat on the Nintendo DS. Some have come to the conclusion that Twitter was a dreadful place before Musk put his paws on it, and therefore won’t be joining the #LeaveTwitter gang.

Others, meantime, are astonished by Elon Musk’s mentality and the approach he used to acquire Twitter, when it might have been as simple as his “becoming less obnoxious” with his dubious meme taste. People have responded by making equally awkward memes to match his style.
