Lady Gaga and Liza Minnelli shared one of the most emotional moments from the Oscars
Academy Awards generated a lot of buzz. Some of it is rather good. Some of it is bad. Some of it was unexpected. One of the surprising moments occurred between Chris Rock and Will Smith, but there was another, far sweeter, unexpected moment.
Lady Gaga was picked to deliver the Best Picture award, and she requested to do it with Liza Minnelli, according to reports. When Minnelli rolled on the stage in her wheelchair, the audience applauded and gave her a standing ovation. “Do you see that?” Gaga asked Minnelli as she leaned up close to her. “The general public adores you.”
Minnelli shifted between a smile and a confused expression. “I don’t understand,” she admitted to Gaga as she ruffled through some notes. It was all right. Gaga had Minnelli’s back, keeping the focus on her while also assisting her when she didn’t know what to do.
“I got cha,” Gaga told Minnelli after tripping over the phrases on the teleprompter. “I know,” Minnelli responds in hushed tones. “Thank you very much.” In the video below, you can see for yourself how sweet this interaction is.
Many fans and Oscar viewers have been curious as to why Minnelli is in a wheelchair and what is causing her health problems.
Minnelli was diagnosed with encephalitis in the year 2000. “Liza Minnelli has been a patient here for the previous several days,” her doctor, Dr. Maurice Hanson, told Reuters at the time. “Her viral encephalitis is being treated. She was pretty ill and in critical condition, but she is currently doing much better, and we anticipate to release her in a few days.”
In 2021, Minnelli used Facebook to refute tabloid allegations that her health was deteriorating. “Hey Kids!” she wrote. “Following my enjoyable birthday festivities with close friends, I learned that the National Enquirer (whose circulation must be declining) plans to publish yet another ridiculous story about me. They always use an anonymous ‘close friend,’ but they never use my real friends’ names in any of their stories because they would learn the truth. Please have a look at my recent Instagram/Facebook postings and let me know if you think I’m in poor health or isolated from my friends.”
Minnelli was recently seen having dinner with George Hamilton. According to Suggest, she required assistance getting in and out of a limo since she was in a wheelchair.
Minnelli hasn’t been vocal about her health in recent months, but she seemed to enjoy the audience’s applause and Gaga’s help at the Oscars Sunday night.
