Maggie and Negan will star in their own Walking Dead spin-off series set in a zombie-infested New York City. AMC’s post-apocalyptic drama series is based on Robert Kirkman’s comic novels of the same name and follows several groups of survivors striving to survive in the midst of a zombie apocalypse while also dealing with other hostile organizations. Maggie, the former leader of the Hilltop who is now defending a new group of people known as the Wardens, is played by Lauren Cohan, and Negan, the former leader of the villainous Saviors, is played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who has formed a parental bond with Lydia, the daughter of Whisperer leader Alpha.

Since its premiere in 2010, The Walking Dead has established itself as a major cultural landmark for AMC and cable television in general, receiving a slew of positive reviews and many Golden Globe nominations. The show’s popularity has led to the creation of a broader franchise, which includes two spin-off shows, Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond, as well as plans for two additional spinoffs and a trilogy of films focusing on Andrew Lincoln’s Rick following his presumed death. AMC now appears to be expanding its Walking Dead universe even more.

AMC has revealed a new The Walking Dead spin-off TV program starring Maggie and Negan, following the premiere of the current season 10 episode. The show, titled Isle of the Dead, is directed by franchise veteran Eli Jorné and will follow two characters as they travel to a zombie-infested Manhattan and New York City. The following statement was written by Lauren Cohan, who is also connected to executive produce alongside Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jorné.

“I’m delighted that Negan and Maggie’s journey continues. It’s been such a ride walking in Negan’s shoes, I’m beyond excited to continue his journey in New York City with Lauren. Walkers in an urban setting has always been such a cool image, but 5th Avenue, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty? The greatest city in the world?? The backdrop is amazing, but it’s the story that Eli Jorné cooked up that is even better. Buckle up folks, Isle of the Dead is going to reinvent the TWD Universe. Huge thank you to Dan McDermott, Scott Gimple and AMC for having us back for more… we simply can’t wait.”

The announcement of Maggie and Negan’s Walking Dead spin-off comes as the two are forced to meet one other in season 11 of the hit series, with the former’s mission to regain her old village Meridian from the Reapers. Their voyage has put them in danger not only from walkers and Reapers, but also from one other, as Negan suspects Maggie of plotting to kill him and chooses to abandon her in a subway tunnel amidst a swarm of walkers. Despite their disagreements following Negan’s killing of Glenn in season 7, the two have now made a fine team after reuniting.

The last time Maggie and Negan were seen together in The Walking Dead, the latter parted ways as he realized the former would never forgive him for his acts, with a small time jump also suggesting a battle between Maggie and her Hilltop community with Daryl as he leads Commonwealth soldiers. The Isle of the Dead spin-off show’s announcement does not specify when it takes place in the mothership series’ narrative, prompting worries about how it will connect to the rest of the hit drama’s eleventh and final season. Only time will tell, since The Walking Dead season 11 airs on AMC on Sundays, while Isle of the Dead is set to debut in 2023.
