The future of human birth – What if women didn’t have to give birth ever again?

The concept of human ectogenesis, or the process of producing a baby outside of the human body, has always been considered science fiction, but that may not be the case for much longer.

In recent years, scientific advancements in this field have made significant progress, particularly in our ability to care for severely premature neonates. How near are we, though, to being able to produce human life wholly outside of the human body? What societal effects might it have on gender equality and our perceptions of what it means to be a mother if women were no longer required to give birth?
